Geneviève Dion is an award-winning designer with an extensive background in bespoke clothing and industrial design. Professor Dion’s research uses advanced manufacturing processes for the flexible production of mass-customizable textiles. Within this focus, her group investigates modular production of 3D knit fabrication for the development of seamlessly knitted electronic yarns into “Garment Devices”. Dion believes that design thinking and doing plays an important role at the onset of the scientific process and brings this unique approach to her multidisciplinary research laboratory.
Professor Dion is the director of the recently created Center for Functional Fabrics, leveraging transdisciplinary strengths in engineering, design and social sciences at Drexel University. She is the PI on the Integrated Design Research & Engineering for Advanced Manufacturing project sponsored by the Drexel Areas of Research Excellence initiative. Dion serves as Co-PI on two NSF funded projects, "PFI: BIC Wearable Smart Textiles Based on Programmable and Automated Knitting Technology for Biomedical and Sensor Actuation Applications" and, "A Design Framework for Programmable Manufacturing of Customized Knitted Materials". She has recently received funding from the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative for “Diagnostic Design: Knitted Passive Probes” with Dr. Shu Yang, PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Dion also works on industry funded projects. Prior to joining Drexel University in 2007, the core of Geneviève’s work explored novelprocesses that allow the metamorphosis of planar materials into unique three-dimensional forms. Her collections were sold in prestigious stores such as Bergdorf Goodman, and her work on permanently pleated silk is in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (2003) and the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco (2011).
