Luis J. Olivieri
Bio
Luis Olivieri is the Director of GIS at Hopeworks ‘N Camden, a nonprofit that for over 17 years has used an advanced training curriculum, working with youth 14-23 to get back in school and find a safe pathway to their future.
He received his B.S. and M.S. from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (UPRM) and also has a number of graduate courses and research experience from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
He has worked for 16 years as a professor in the areas of GIS, remote sensing, and GPS at different universities and colleges, including the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez and Rowan University. While working at the University of Puerto Rico, he directed a program sponsored by NASA, recognized by the agency as one of their best education programs at the time. He worked as a researcher for the Puerto Rico Water Resources and Environment Research Institute, and has worked as a consultant for the private sector, and State and Federal agencies.
Passion, excitement and fulfillment are words that describe what Luis feels for his profession. When he is not enjoying his job or talking about it, he spends time in the company of his family, enjoying nature, hiking and kayaking through the creeks and rivers of southern Jersey. If you ask Luis to describe GIS in one sentence, he will tell you, “GIS is amazing technology and it is everywhere!”
